I’m Yessy Downs
Your Favorite Copywriter’s Favorite Copywriter
I am a bilingual, first-gen, ADHD Latina. I am also a copywriter and creative director with degrees in English, Communications, and Advertising from the University of Florida and Miami Ad School.
My love for writing and my relentless ambition have helped me break barriers in my personal and professional life. After trading law school for portfolio school, I began racking up an impressive client roster that includes Dunkin’, Burger King, MichelobULTRA, Uber, Samsung, and Heinz, and was awarded for my work in the advertising industry. Today I work as a Global Copy Director at Uber, while running a successful copywriting agency–the Oxford Comma Collective.
But all that shiny shit doesn’t matter. With a diverse writing skillset (including copywriting, scriptwriting, and speechwriting) and a deep understanding of DEI, intersectionality, and culture, I use my talents to uplift my communities and other marginalized voices. My specialty? Bringing authentic, diverse, unique stories to life through brands, and helping business owners infuse their brands with the cultures, values, beliefs, and passions that make them unique.
Through my work, I don’t just create disruptive, impactful, category-defying copy––I help fellow jefas step away from internalized ideals, and build businesses that embrace and exhibit the characteristics, cultures, and stories they’ve been hiding away.

We Can Talk About…
Overcoming Obstacles as a Latina
I’ve spent a lot of time in rooms that were not made for me, talking to people who were not interested in what I had to say, so I know a thing or two about succeeding (and failing, TBH) in the face of adversity.
Showing Up Authentically
I built an entire brand by doing exactly this. The allure and power of the Oxford Comma Collective come from me doing things my way, and after years of work, therapy, and going against the grain (in my business and in corporate America), I have a lot of experience with finding subtle and not-so-subtle ways to remain true to yourself in business and in other parts of life.
Copywriting, Naming, Brand Voice
THIS IS WHAT I DO. This is what I went to school for, this is my craft, this is what I do day in and day out. I can talk and teach about any of these topics on the spot, for any length of time because it is in my blood.
Running a Small Business
After years of working full-time while running a small business, I understand the nuances of running a business, and I love sharing my knowledge and experiences with those who want to learn.
The Power and Importance of Pivoting
I’ve been an aspiring film major, a pre-law student, an accountant, a copywriter, and a business owner. In fact, I didn’t discover copywriting until I was 24 years old. And none of my success would’ve been possible without my openness and willingness to pivot at the exact right time.
Championing DEI and Representation
I have dedicated my career to championing diversity and telling real stories, about real people that have been left untold.
…And so much more
These are just a few of the things we can talk about. But if you’ve got another topic you’d love to chat about, let me know.
